Human Platelet Lysate in Microgel Bioreactor Culture

PL BioScience
PL BioScience·22 June 2026·1 minute read

Culturing umbilical cord MSCs as microgels in stirred tank reactors, this study examined effects on extracellular vesicle secretion and cell function using Human Platelet Lysate (HPL) and heparin from PL BioScience.

This study cultured umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ucMSCs) as microgels within stirred tank bioreactors and examined how this culture format affected extracellular vesicle (EV) secretion, cell metabolism and functional readouts. The work addresses process-relevant questions for scaling MSC and EV production.

The upstream culture workflow used Human Platelet Lysate (HPL) and heparin from PL BioScience, with ultracentrifuged HPL applied specifically for the EV-focused experiments. HPL supported the culture conditions underlying this bioreactor and EV production workflow.
