Human Platelet Lysate for Vascular Cell Differentiation

PL BioScience
PL BioScience·6 February 2026·1 minute read

In this preprint, Human Platelet Lysate (HPL) supported differentiation of pluripotent stem cells into vascular mural cells; 1% HPL performed comparably to 10% fetal bovine serum, with concentration shaping cell fate.

In this preprint, researchers tested Human Platelet Lysate (HPL) as a fetal bovine serum (FBS) alternative for differentiating human induced pluripotent stem cells into vascular mural cells under clinically compliant conditions. Just 1% HPL performed comparably to 10% FBS for mural cell differentiation, while the HPL concentration used strongly influenced the resulting cell fate.

PL BioScience and ELAREM™ products were not specifically tested in this work. Its relevance lies in what it shows for HPL in general: as an FBS alternative in stem cell differentiation, the concentration of HPL matters as much as the choice of supplement.
